Is it one drain or the main line?

Where the water backs up tells you a lot:

  • One fixture is slow (a single sink, tub or toilet): the clog is usually in that fixture's branch line.
  • Several fixtures are slow, or the lowest drain in the house backs up (a basement floor drain or a downstairs toilet): that points to the main line.
  • Gurgling when you flush or run water, or bubbling at a cleanout: the line is partly blocked and air is fighting the water.
  • A sewage smell along with slow drains: the line needs attention soon, not later.

If it's the main, stop running water until it's cleared. Every flush adds to the backup.

How we clear drains in Fenton

We pick the access point and the tool to fit the clog, not the other way around:

  • Cable machines from the right spot: an outside cleanout, a basement floor sweep, a pulled toilet, or a crawlspace backflow preventer.
  • Hydro jetting for grease, sludge and roots, when cabling would only punch a hole.
  • A sewer camera when a line keeps backing up or the cable stops at the same spot.
  • Septic and lift station homes: clearing from the tank side when that's the better route, and cycling the lift pump to confirm flow.

You'll get the options and approve the price before any work starts. More on main line and sewer cleaning.

Recent drain jobs in Fenton and Linden

A downstairs bathroom overflowing, Landings Way, Fenton (March)

The line was holding water about 15 feet out, and the camera couldn't get past 30 feet. Mitch cabled 100 feet three times and planned a return visit to bag and jet the line. When the basement backed up again about a week later with gurgling at the cleanout, he cabled 100 feet from the basement floor sweep and got the line flowing.

Plastic buildup at a lift station, W Thompson Rd, Fenton Township (April)

Drains near the sink and washer kept backing up. Mitch found plastic buildup in the line, cabled the floor sweep 80 feet twice, and cycled the lift pump to get flow back.

Grease past the reach of a hand snake, Sunset Way, Linden (March)

The homeowner's 25-foot snake didn't clear the kitchen line. The clog was heavy grease, and Mitch reached it with a mini-snake from the crawlspace backflow preventer. Same story on Shoreline Dr in Fenton in June: a 25-foot snake failed, the blockage was about 35 feet in, and cabling 45 feet to the main stack cleared it.

Upstairs toilets and showers gurgling, Ripley Rd, Linden (April)

A second-floor toilet was backing up and the upstairs showers were slow. Mitch pulled the master bath toilet, cabled about 35 feet, and reset the toilet.

Drains that were built wrong, W Silver Lake Rd, Fenton (September)

The toilets kept refilling and the ceiling of a basement suite was leaking. Mitch found two back-to-back bathroom drains making several turns within 10 feet, with sections pitched the wrong way so they held water. Cabling wouldn't fix that, so he priced rebuilding the drains instead.

Kitchen drains and garbage disposals

A lot of Fenton kitchen calls come down to grease, food peels and old plumbing under the sink:

  • A dead, plugged disposal on Harborview Dr in Linden: removed it, installed a basket strainer and new drain piping, and cabled 15 feet.
  • A disposal removal on Longmeadow St in Fenton: corroded shutoffs, the wrong drain parts and no vent. Travis repiped it in 1-1/2-inch PVC with a Studor vent, new baskets and quarter-turn shutoffs.
  • Both sinks and the dishwasher backed up on Sleeping Beauty Ct: food peels blocking the trap.

Keep grease, coffee grounds and peels out of the drain and you'll avoid most of these. More on garbage disposals.

When a sewer camera is worth it

A camera inspection shows what's really in the line: roots, a shifted joint, a sag holding water, or buildup. It's worth doing when a line keeps backing up, when the cable can't pass a spot, or before you buy a house. On one Fenton job, the camera found roots and a shifted joint behind a basement drain backup. You can read that job on our Fenton page.

Fenton drain cleaning FAQ

Should I try a store-bought snake first?

For a single slow sink, sure. But if a 25-foot snake doesn't reach the clog, stop there. Twice this year in the Fenton area, a homeowner's 25-foot snake couldn't clear a kitchen line that we then cleared with a longer cable.

Do you jet sewer lines?

Yes. Jetting scours grease, sludge and roots off the pipe walls instead of just punching a hole through them. We use it when cabling alone won't keep a line open.

Do you work on homes with septic tanks or lift stations?

Yes. We clear lines into septic tanks, often by cabling from the tank side, and we service drains that run to a lift station, including cycling the lift pump.

When do I need a sewer camera inspection?

When the same line keeps backing up, when the cable can't get past a spot, when you suspect roots, or when you're buying a house. The camera shows what's actually in the line and how far out it is.

Do you clear drains at night or on weekends?

Yes. We answer 24/7. If sewage is backing up into your basement, call (810) 673-7228 any time.
