When our customer wanted to have a new commercial water heater installed in her shop as she noticed that her previous one was consuming too much energy, she called upon our services. We provided her with a list of commercial water heaters. She chose the AO Smith Proline model, which was fantastic because it is environmentally friendly and not a gas water heater.

What Is a Commercial-Grade Water Heater?
A water heater is not just a water heater. There's a world of difference between the one that sits in your basement and the one that keeps businesses running smoothly. In order to understand what makes them different, you first need to understand what a commercial water heater does well.
A commercial water heater is made for consistent running. It can withstand the wear and tear that come with constant usage, especially in commercial settings like hotels and office buildings where there are plenty of people around the clock. A commercial grade water heater lasts around 20 years with proper maintenance and repairs. Unlike residential models, commercial grade water heaters can manage several hot water devices at once and have their temperature regulated automatically.
There are plenty of commercial water heaters that are good but for this instance, we will use the AO Smith Proline water heater as this is one of the better ones. Proline offers a variety of water heater products, from electric to gas, residential and commercial, and all of them are quality. Whether it's an electric or a gas water heater, it is designed to reduce Nox emissions as well as reduce your energy bills, which is why it is included in the list of commercial water heaters we show. With so many benefits, it's easy to see why they're so popular among businesses.
Is a Commercial Water Heater Better Than Residential Water Heater?
Although the two types of water heaters do differ, the difference may not be as large as what a homeowner might imagine. They both utilize electric or gas, and they both come in a variety of sizes. The main distinction between the two is that commercial water heaters are generally more powerful than residential ones. Commercial properties will often use their water heater far more frequently than a residential property would, so its size should reflect the need for it to be used frequently. Both of them have their own benefits and disadvantages, which we will explain below. When you go shopping for commercial gas water heaters or residential water heaters, you need to consider the capacity of your home or business.
Difference Between Commercial Water Heaters and Residential Water Heaters
- Residential water heaters aren't designed for long-term use like commercial water heaters are. In a commercial setting, there is often more than one faucet going at one time and the same heating element needs to provide enough hot water for everyone at that time. Residential water heaters simply can't handle that kind of demand without excessive maintenance or even needing to be replaced entirely.
- How about safety? A commercial water heater is designed for frequent use and thus gets hotter than a residential model. The increased temperature makes the unit more dangerous to handle, which is why a residential water heater is safer to use and handle.
- When you need to heat up a lot of water, it is best that you choose a commercial water heater (Residential ones handle 100 gallons while commercial ones handle 250). They are usually more powerful than residential water heaters (75,000 BTUs) and can provide up to 1,000,000 BTUs of heat. However, a commercial water heater is also often more expensive than residential water heaters. It is important that you factor in not only the cost of the unit but also the installation costs and other additional expenses that will be associated with it.
